Oil Stays Elevated While Stocks Attempt Recovery

Traders are coming back after the weekend, and this time the market avoided a major surprise. Given recent events, holding positions over the weekend carried significant risk, but fortunately, there was no major escalation in the Middle East that could have dramatically shifted sentiment.

There are still tensions involving Iran, but nothing impactful enough to trigger panic at the open. As a result, markets are starting the week on a more optimistic note.

Equity indices are opening on the green side, attempting a rebound after a very weak end to last week. Friday was particularly heavy, as investors reduced exposure to risk ahead of the weekend. That cautious positioning is now being partially reversed, leading to a relief rally.

However, the broader picture is still mixed. Oil remains elevated, reflecting ongoing uncertainty around supply and geopolitical risks. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz continues to support prices, keeping the market cautious.

At the same time, precious metals are also moving higher. Both Gold and Silver are gaining, which suggests that demand for safe-haven assets is still present despite the rebound in equities.

On the currency market, we are seeing strength in defensive currencies. The US dollar and Japanese yen are both gaining, while European currencies are under pressure. Antipodean currencies are particularly weak, with both the Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar moving lower.

In the crypto space, Bitcoin is showing an interesting move. The price swept local lows overnight, likely triggering stop orders, and then reversed sharply. Since that move, Bitcoin has gained around 4.5%, indicating a strong short-term recovery.

Overall, the week starts with a relief tone, especially on indices. But with oil holding high and safe havens still attracting demand, the market is far from fully confident. The next moves will likely depend on whether this calmer sentiment holds or new geopolitical developments emerge.
